End Of The Line

Part 1

It was a warm evening, the winds blew across the Nevada desert. The light of the moon shined upon the roof of a large metal building. A metal hand stretched up, the moons light streaming past her slender fingers, a smile coming to her delicate pale gray face.  “It’s amazing. The moon is so low right now. It’s almost like I can touch it.”

Brightshine felt comforting arms around her shoulder plating. “The moon is beautiful, but not much as you my dear.”  Hard-Wire said softly.

Brightshine grinned from pink side fin to pink side fin. “Oh you’re so cheesy.” She playfully hit him on the shoulder plating. Then she leaned close. “But that’s what I love about you.” Then the two young bots shared a kiss.  Then they sat there, staring up at the large moon.

“You’re still here. Daddy’s gonna flip you know.”  Brightshine and Hard-Wire turned to see Vector standing there with his arms crossed. “Daddy will be home from work soon.”

Brightshine stood up looking down at her little brother. “I know that. Daddy knows about Hard-Wire. And Momma does too. Shouldn’t you be asleep. Daddy will be upset if he finds out you stay up half the night.”

Vector stared at his sister. “I like to wait for him.” Then he took a gaming tablet from behind his back. “Daddy doesn’t mind.” Then he started playing.

Hard-Wire recognized the tablet Vector was using. “I had one of those when I first began functioning. The doctor gave it to me. It was fun.”

Brightshine turned to Hard-Wire. “That creepy red bot.”  

“He’s really not that bad. He’s like a father to me. He helps me a lot. I owe my life to him.” Hard-Wire said calmly.

Vector’s attention was finally grabbed when he heard mention of the ‘red’ bot. “Red bot. I saw him once. When I snuck into Uncle Smokescreens cabin. He looks like somebody I know.”

Hard-Wire stared at Vector a moment. It was too soon. He couldn’t let the boy know that Knockout was his real father. “I don’t think so.” Then he turned to Brightshine. “The hour is late, I should get going before I’m missed.”

“You don’t have to go.” Brightshine said with loving eyes.

“Yeah, I was just joking. You’re cool to hang with.” Added Vector.

“It’s alright. I really do have to go. If I’m gone too long, somebody might suspect something. And I won’t put you in danger.” Then he hugged Brightshine gave her a gentle kiss on the cheek. “Goodnight my dear.”  Then he smiled and pet Vector on the head. Sleep tight Vector.”

Brightshine stepped aside as he transformed into a beetle. “Be well.” Then he took off.

The two siblings waved at him. “Bye, be careful.”

Brightshine turned to her little brother. “Come on you little monster, let’s get you to bed.”

“But I want to wait for Daddy.”

“Come on.”

Hard-Wire landed on the runway deck, then transformed. He saw troopers rushing about.

He jumped slightly as Knockout appeared in front of him.  “Where have you been?” The red doctor grabbed his arm and pulled into a doorway that led into the ship. “I can’t keep covering for you. Starscream is in a tizzy and Megatron is planning the next mission.”

They walked down the hall. “Megatron has decided the war has gone on long enough. He’s planning one final attack on the Autobots. And I’m going out of my mind here.”

They got to the med bay. They were alone. “If Megatron attacks, my son will be in danger.”

Hard-Wire stared at him. He knew. He knew Vector was his son.

Knockout took Hard-Wires shoulders. “Listen kid. You and that child are the only family I have. I can’t let that go. Not even for Megatron.”

Hard-Wire stared at the red doctor. He had so much love for him at this moment he thought he would burst. He threw his arms around the red doctor. “You’re the best.”

Knockout was always surprised at Hard-Wire’s display of affection.  “Yeah yeah. I forgot you’re a hugger. We have to come up with a plan.”

“Yes.” agreed Hard-Wire. “I can’t let anything happen to Brightshine or her family.”

“We have to figure out something.” said Knockout as he opened the med bay doors and saw some troopers rush by. “Or we’ll all go down in flames.”
